About

Why I built MedRank.

When I had to rank over a thousand foundation jobs, I assumed the hard part would be choosing between good options. It wasn't. The hard part was finding anything useful to choose with.

I opened a spreadsheet and started googling hospitals one by one. Most searches went nowhere. The ones that didn't led to outdated PDFs, half-finished deanery pages, or forum threads where the best answer was usually “yeah, it was alright.” I kept closing my laptop, reopening it, and doing the same thing again, because the deadline wasn't moving, and neither was the guesswork.

What stuck with me was that the data already existed. The GMC surveys thousands of trainees every year. The CQC inspects NHS hospitals and publishes the results. It was all public, just scattered across different sites, in different formats, never in one place when you actually needed to rank.

I built MedRank because I wanted that decision to feel less like luck. It pulls together CQC inspection data, GMC trainee satisfaction scores, and the tools below.

No hearsay. No endless forum trawling. Just the information I wished I'd had when I was ranking, built for the next person sitting where I was.

Features

Hospital Explorer

Search UK training hospitals on an interactive map. See CQC ratings, service breakdowns, and inspection history alongside GMC trainee satisfaction by specialty and programme. Filter and sort by rating, region, or satisfaction score, compare up to three sites side by side, or open a full hospital profile with trainee metrics in one place.

Rotation Builder

Build a rotation by adding placements and grouping them into jobs, with your score updating live as you edit. View everything on a map with travel distance, moves, and commute estimates. Set a home postcode or base placement to see what the commute would look like, then save multiple rotations to your account.

Saved Rotations

Rank and reorder saved rotation drafts, with a score summary covering trainee satisfaction, CQC, and travel. Export a shortlist as CSV or PDF when you are ready, or share a rotation with a link on Pro.

Oriel Ranker

Upload your Oriel CSV export and let MedRank match each rotation to real hospital data automatically. Rank by quality, distance, commute, or a balanced score, filter and review placements before you submit, then export a ranked list ready to apply back on Oriel.

Data Sources

Care Quality Commission (CQC)

Official healthcare quality ratings for all NHS and private hospitals in England. Data updated monthly from CQC Open Data.

GMC National Training Survey

Annual trainee satisfaction data from the General Medical Council, covering training quality, supervision, and working conditions. Published yearly at GMC National Training Surveys.
